Learning To Love The Girl In The Mirror

I was approached by The Book Publicist and offered the chance to read Learning To Love The Girl In The Mirror*, a new book by Helena Grace Donald, how could I resist.

Body Positivity is a huge deal and you know I’m always willing to do what I can to spread awareness and encourage others to accept and embrace themselves.

Before I get into the book review, here’s a little info on Helena..

Who is Helena Grace Donald?

Helena Grace Donald was born in London. After training professionally as an actress, at the age of twenty, Helena relocated to Los Angeles where she has two movies coming out this year.

She is the founder of Girl Unfiltered. Her mission is to inspire girls to love and value themselves so that they feel empowered as they journey into the wonderful world of womanhood.

Still in her early twenties, Helena relates easily to teenage girls and understands what it’s like to be in their shoes. More information can be found at http://www.girlunfiltered.com

Learning To Love The Girl In The Mirror

This book is for every girl who has ever looked in the mirror and criticized her own reflection; for every girl who has ever compared herself negatively to others; for every girl who has ever thought of dieting and also for all the girls who are already struggling with negative body image issues and unhealthy eating habits.

My Thoughts

When I first found out about this book I was excited to read it, not only because has been on my must-read list since I found out about it, but also because I was intrigued to read about someone else’s experience with body image and how they conquered their demons.

Even better that it arrived really quickly and they obviously knew that the way to this girl’s heart is through a good book and a cup of tea because it came accompanied by a very tasty chai tea.

Enough about that though, let’s get into the book.

The first thing you notice is the big, bright smile beaming across Helena’s face on the front cover which makes you instantly drawn to it, even more so when you open it to be greeted by a letter from Helena herself, a letter written so well that even though you know that it’s printed in every copy it somehow feels like it has been written especially for you.

Another great touch is the addition of inspirational quotes that are scattered throughout, because who doesn’t love a bit of motivation and inspiration from some of their favourite celebrities.

The book itself is a mixture of reflections by the author that are powerful enough to bring a tear to even the hardest of people and self-help information so that you have the guidance and support that you need to make positive changes.

The Verdict

Written for young women by a young woman…

This could not be more apt and I can’t help but think that if I had something like this as a teenage girl and been aware of all the support that is available, my life would have been a little better and if I had a teenage daughter I would definitely give her this to read.

Written in a way that does not patronise or condescend, it feels like you can be reading something written by a friend and that is what makes this book so effective.

In my opinion, this is a self-love bible that is a must-have for every young woman who has ever doubted herself or been bullied into thinking she is anything but good enough by others or her ‘little miss critical’
